ALENQUER (PORTUGAL)

ALENQUER

N 39.05113º; W 9.00459º

Alenquer is a Portuguese municipality belonging to the District of Lisbon, integrating the Intermunicipal Community of the West in the Central region of Portugal.
It is based in the homonymous village of Alenquer with close to 9,000 inhabitants, which is bathed by the river of the same name.

The Municipality of Alenquer, with an area of 304.22 km² and 43 267 inhabitants (2011), is subdivided into 11 parishes. The municipality is limited to the north by the municipality of Cadaval, to the east by Azambuja, to the southeast by Vila Franca de Xira, to the south by Arruda dos Vinhos, to the southwest by Sobral de Monte Agraço, and the west by Torres Vedras.
The municipality of Alenquer can be seen, in general, as a space in the process of expansion, especially urbanistically, and in which the economic base is strongly marked by agriculture, especially vineyards and wine.

The evolution has been conditioned by the territorial positioning of the municipality to the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon (AML), the main production and consumption center in the country. This circumstance, closely linked to the geographical proximity and the growing allocation in terms of transport infrastructures, gave Alenquer (namely the areas of the municipality best served in this field) a significant competitive advantage with effects on the creation of important development dynamics.
